On July 16th, 2014, at 9.30 a.m., in the framework of the EU project  «ADRIAIR – Airport Security and Air Taxi Network in the Adriatic», the Province presented the main findings of the market research assessing the potential of an air-taxi service, both for passengers and goods, between the two borders of the Adriatic Sea. The research was conducted by the University of Bologna, project partner, in collaboration with the other partners involved: first in line, the Province of Forlì-Cesena, then the Province of Ravenna, the Tirana Chamber of Commerce, the Bosnian development agency LIR, and the airports of Dubrovnik, Rijeka and Pula.

ADRIAIR aims at finding alternative travelling solutions, filling a gap in the current air system which forces passengers to make an intermediate stop in Central European airports in order to fly to cities across the border.

The Action Plan of the project was presented during the meeting. The plan expands the outcomes of the preliminary study on the market potential of an air-taxi service between the Adriatic countries, in order to target ideal clients and service levels and outline an assessment of the potential demand in the examined field.

The results of the analysis show both potential for development and critical issues. In fact, there is an interesting flow of passengers interested in using this service, mainly businessmen requiring a better and quicker way of transportation between the two borders of the Adriatic Sea. At the same time, they also need to be reassured on the safety of the air-taxi service compared to airline flights. Another major concern is the current cost of the service, partly due to the tax rates differing in the partner countries.

Notwithstanding these critical issues, the Action Plan lays the foundation for further advancements to the project, considering both the availability of the infrastructures, the local entrepreneurial network and the harmonization of airport taxation, in order to cut down the costs for a better sustainability.
